(AFI EXERCISE)
03:17
Written, Directed, Shot, Edited by Nello DiGiandomenico
Starring Paige Bundy and Bryan Harnden
1) Sitting at a table, CHARACTER A is engaged in an action (say, studying).
2) CHARACTER B enters the room, sits across from A, and begins her/his own
action (say, seduction), which escalates, either repelling or attracting “A”.
3) At the end, “A” leaves the room and “B” assumes “A’s” seat at the table.
RULES:
1) Craft a screenplay for this exercise with NO DIALOGUE.
2) CHARACTER B’s entrance in to the room through a doorway should be on
screen, as should “A’s” exit.
3) You do not need to use actors. Feel free to use friends/roommates.
4) Do the proper DETECTIVE WORK on your script.
5) Your scene should have at least THREE DRAMATIC BLOCKS.
6) All NARRATIVE BEATS must be articulated.
7) Determine the FULCRUM of the scene.
8) Camera remains static – NO MOVING CAMERA (no zooms/pans/tilts/etc.).
9) All shots must be set up on a tripod – NO HANDHELD CAMERA.
10) The director must operate the camera.
11) Respect the 180 degree rule and the 30 degree rule (unless warranted). 12) NO JUMP CUTS.
13) Your priorities are COMPOSITION, SHOT SELECTION & SHOT PROGRESSION. 14) ELABORATE what’s important and COMPRESS what’s not.
15) Know when to go SUBJECTIVE and when to go OBJECTIVE.
16) While editing, focus on ACTION and EMOTION.
17) Your scene should run somewhere between 2 to 4 minutes.
18) Have fun. Be imaginative. Engage the audience.
